  2. Tetris 1.0

  4. This distribution of Tetris contains two files:
  5.  
  6.     Tetris:    the executable for the game
  7.     README:    the file that you are reading now
  8.  
  9. The NeXT version of Tetris resulted from my desire to have the game on
  10. the NeXT.  Tetris is quite a popular game here on campus, and since
  11. it's available on almost all makes of computers, it is played quite a
  12. lot.  However, now that I am using a NeXT quite a bit in my daily
  13. computing work, I realize that I'm missing out on the fun of being
  14. able to play the game on this machine.  So, here is my attempt at
  15. reconciling the problem.

  17. Tetris is freeware, so please feel free to pass it along to others.  I
  18. only ask that you include this README file with the game so that
  19. others will know how to install the program.  Feel free to send me any
  20. suggestions or bugs you find.  If there is enough response, I'll work
  21. on a future version.

  26. INSTALLATION
  27. ------------

  29. Installation is quite simple.  As in the normal case, move the Tetris
  30. program either to your own Apps directory or to the /LocalApps
  31. directory.  I suggest that you install it in /LocalApps so that
  32. everyone on the system can play.  (You may need superuser access to do
  33. this, though.)  After you've done one of these two, go to the
  34. Utilities menu in Workspace and choose Find Applications to update the
  35. icons.

  37. The only tricky part comes from a file called .TetrisScores, a file
  38. that Tetris uses to keep track of high scores.  This file can be
  39. installed in the same directory as the one that Tetris is in, or in
  40. your home directory.  If you install the program in /LocalApps, then
  41. it would make sense to keep .TetrisScores in /LocalApps.  Normally,
  42. this file is created automatically by Tetris after the first run, but
  43. if you install Tetris in /LocalApps, then you'll have to do some
  44. preparations to make the file accessible to everyone.

  46. If you decide to install it in /LocalApps, then do the following after
  47. installing the program.  Run the Terminal application and enter 'touch
  48. /LocalApps/.TetrisScores'.  Finally, do a 'chmod 666
  49. /LocalApps/.TetrisScores'.  (An alternative way to give everyone
  50. access to .TetrisScores is to create the file and set the
  51. setuid-to-root bit for the Tetris program.  If you understand what
  52. this means, then you already know how to do it.)
